Where to keep your passport when traveling: 5 options compared
Share
Losing your passport while traveling is one of the worst things that can happen: paperwork, lines at the consulate and sometimes a missed flight. Where is it best to carry it? We compare the 5 most common options.
1. In your pants pocket
Pros: comfortable and always at hand. Cons: it’s the first place a pickpocket looks, it gets bent and damaged, and it can fall out when you sit down.
2. In your backpack or bag
Pros: everything fits. Cons: on your back, you can’t see it. If you choose this option, use an inside zip pocket and wear your backpack on your front in crowded places.
3. In a fanny pack
Pros: it’s in front of you and your hands are free. Cons: it’s in plain sight and makes it obvious where you keep your valuables.
4. In the hotel safe
Pros: very secure while you’re out. Cons: you don’t have it on you if someone asks for it. When traveling within the European Union, an ID card is often enough, but some places will ask for your passport.
5. In a hidden wallet under your clothes
Pros: it sits against your body, no one sees it and your hands are free. Cons: taking things out is a bit slower, so it’s a good idea to keep some cash separately for everyday spending.
Our recommendation
Combine them: carry your passport, backup cards and important cash in a hidden belt wallet, and keep only what you’ll spend that day at hand. And before you leave, save a photo of your documents to the cloud.
